LMIGHTY God, and heavenly Father, who, of

cessions, and giving of Thanks, be made for all mes; for Kings, and for all that are in Authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty; for this is good and acceptable unto God our Saviour. i Tim. ii, 1, 2, 3.

If we say that we have no fin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse üs from all unrighteousness. 1 St. John i. 8, 9.

The merciful and gracious Lord hath so done his mar. vellous works : that they ought to be had in remembrance. Psalm cxi. 4. ever fince the reign of King Charles I. for that day on purpofe. It is true, after the death of that prince, this pious custom received a long and doletul interruption, which changed the day, on wlrich King Charles the Second succeeded to the crown, into a day of forrow and fafting. And indeed a great part of the duty of that day, and the devotions proper to it, were performed in the service for the twenty-ninth of May. However, upon King James Ild's Accession, the former laudable and religious practice was immediately revived; a Form of Prayer and Thanksgiving having been composed by the Bishops for this purpose, in many things agreeing with this we now ufe. But in the reign of King William the Inauguration festival was again difused: and it must be owned there was fo much the less occasion for it during his reign, as there were large additions made to the Form of Thanksgiving appointed for the Fifth of November, to commemorate his arrival, which happened on that day. However, when Queen Anne succeeded to the throne, there was freth occasion to revise the festival

And therefore the day was again ordered to be observed, and a Form of Prayer with Thanksgiving drawn up, part of it being taken from King James's office, and part of it being composed entirely new; and is, altogether, the fame (except the firft lexon) with the present office. The names of the Royal Family having been altered as occasions required--Wheadkey.

Pfalm ci.] In the room of this plalm were appointed the lxxxvth and cxviith, in James Ild's office, as alluding to the exile of that prince with Charles the uld. They were omitted in the office for Queen Anne, and the cift fubftituted in their place.

The firf This lesson was the one originally appointed for the office. In James ild's reign it was altered to Proverbs viii. 13, to the end, but restored in that of Queen Agne.
