By Thy helpless infant years,
By Thy life of want and tears,
By Thy days of sore distress
In the savage wilderness,
By the dread mysterious hour
Of the insulting tempter's power,
Turn, O turn a favouring eye,
Hear our solemn Litany!

By Thy deep expiring groan,
By the sad sepulchral stone,
By the vault whose dark abode
Held in vain the rising God!
O, from earth to heaven restored,
Mighty, re-ascended Lord,
Listen, listen to the cry
Of our solemn Litany!

Amen.

54.

Rock of ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flow'd,
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power!

Not the labours of my hands
Can fulfil Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears for ever-flow,

All for sin could not atone-
Thou must save, and Thou alone!

6 of 7.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace ;
Foul, I to the fountain fly-
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne-
Rock of ages! cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee! Amen.

55.

NOT all the blood of beasts

On Jewish altars slain

Could give the guilty conscience peace,

Or wash away the stain.

But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,

Takes all our sins away;

A sacrifice of nobler name,

And richer blood than they.

Believing, we rejoice

To see the curse remove;

S.M.

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,

And sing His bleeding love.

56.

O MOST merciful!

O most bountiful!

God the Father Almighty!

By the Redeemer's

Sweet intercession,

Hear us, help us, when we cry!

5.5.7.

57.

RIDE on! ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die!
O Christ! Thy triumphs now begin
O'er captive death and conquer'd sin.

Ride on! ride on in majesty!
The winged squadrons of the sky
Look down with sad and wondering eyes
To see the approaching sacrifice!

Ride on! ride on in majesty!
Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh;
The Father, on His sapphire throne,
Expects His own anointed Son.

Ride on! ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die!

Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain,

L.M.

Then take, O God, Thy power and reign!

58.

WE sing the praise of Him who died,
Of Him who died upon the cross;

The sinner's hope let men deride,

For this we count the world but loss.

Inscribed upon the cross we see,

In shining letters, God is love; He bears our sins upon the tree, He brings us mercy from above.

L.M.

The cross! it takes our guilt away;
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day,
And sweetens every bitter cup.

It makes the coward spirit brave,
And nerves the feeble arm for fight;
It takes its terror from the grave,
And gilds the bed of death with light.

The balm of life, the cure of woe,
The measure and the pledge of love,
The sinner's refuge here below,
The Angels' theme in heaven above.

59.

SEE the destined day arise,
See a willing sacrifice,
JESUS, to redeem our loss,
Hangs upon the shameful cross.

JESUS, who but Thou had borne,
Lifted on that tree of scorn,
Every pang and bitter throe,
1. Finishing Thy life of woe?

Who but Thou had dared to drain,
Steep'd in gall, the cup of pain;
And with tender body bear

Thorns, and nails, and piercing spear?

Thence pour'd forth the water flow'd,
Mingled from Thy side with blood;
Sign to all attesting eyes

Of the finish'd sacrifice.

78.

Holy JESUS, grant us grace
In that sacrifice to place
All our trust for life renew'd,
Pardon'd sin, and promised good.

Amen.

60.

Go to dark Gethsemane,

Ye that feel the tempter's power; Your Redeemer's conflict see,

Watch with Him one bitter hour: Turn not from His griefs away, Learn of JESUS CHRIST to pray.

Follow to the judgment-hall,
View the Lord of life arraign'd:
O the wormwood and the gall!
O the pangs His soul sustain'd!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss
Learn of Him to bear the cross,

Calvary's mournful mountain climb,
There, adoring at His feet,
Mark that miracle of time,

God's own sacrifice complete : "It is finish'd!"-hear the cry;

Learn of JESUS CHRIST to die.

Early hasten to the tomb,

6 of 7.

Where they laid His breathless clay;

All is solitude and gloom;

Who hath taken Him away

"Christ is risen!" He meets our eyes; Saviour, teach us so to rise,
