HARTFORD, August 5th. At a meeting of the Standing Committee--present, the Rev. Messrs. Wheaton, Sherwood, Humphreys, and Judd-Edward Jones and Gustavus V. Cæsar, were recommended to the Bishop to receive the holy order of Deacons, to be employed as missionaries in Africa.

Gurdon S. Coit presented the testimonials required by the canons, and was recommended to the Bishop as worthy to receive the holy order of Deacons. Adjourned.

HARTFORD, Sept. 3d.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee--present, the Rev. Messrs. Wheaton, Sherwood, and Humphreys-Samuel S. Lewis and Augustus F. Lyde, graduates of Washington College, were recommended as worthy of being admitted as candidates, on the personal knowledge of the Committee, and testimonials laid before them. Adjourned.

HARTFORD, Sept. 29th.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee-present, the Rev. Messrs. Wheaton, Sherwood, and Humphreys-Caleb S. Ives, a graduate of Washington College, was recommended as a candidate for Holy Orders, on the personal knowledge of the Committee, and testimonials laid before them.

John Morgan, also a graduate of Washington College, was recommended to receive the Holy Order of Deacons, the canonical testimonials having been presented. Adjourned.

MIDDLETOWN, Nov. 17.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee-present, the Rev. Messrs. Croswell, Wheaton, Sherwood, and Humphreys-the canonical testimonials of the election of the Rev. Benjamin T. Onderdonk, D. D. to the Episcopate of the Diocese of New-York, having been submitted to them, together with the certificate of said Diocese expressing the wish that he should be consecrated to the Episcopal Office; the certificate required by the canon, was signed by all the members present.

The Standing Committee having been appointed by the Bishop, examiners of Fitch W. Taylor, a candidate for Holy Orders, examined him on the course of studies prescribed by the House of Bishops.

George Jones, a candidate for Holy Orders, presented testimonials of his examinations, and was further examined by the Bishop, in the presence of the Standing Committee. Adjourned to meet the next morning.

MIDDLETOWN, Nov. 18th.

The Standing Committee met according to adjournment, the same Members being present. They recommended to Mr. Jones, a further examination of the subject of Ecclesiastical Polity, according to the course of studies prescribed by the House of Bishops; and

to Mr. Taylor, a further inquiry into the same subject, together with that of Systematic Divinity, in conformity to the prescribed course. James A. Bolles, Isaac Smith, and Samuel Starr, graduates of Washington College, were recommended to be received as candidates for Holy Orders, satisfactory testimonials of their fitness having been offered, and the candidates being personally known to some of the members of the Committee. Adjourned.

NEW-HAVEN, Jan. 11, 1831.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee-present, the Rev. Messrs. Croswell, Wheaton, and Humphreys.

George Jones was again examined on the subject of Ecclesiastical Polity, and recommended to the Bishop to receive the Holy Order of Deacons.

Levi H. Corson, having presented the requisite testimonials, was recommended to receive the Holy Order of Deacons.

John D. Smith was recommended to be received as a candidate. Adjourned.

HARTFORD, May 31. At a meeting of the Standing Committee-present, Rev. Messrs, Croswell, Wheaton, and Judd.

James C. Richmond was recommended to be received as a candidate for Holy Orders, on testimonials laid before them.

Joseph Scott was examined by the Bishop, in the presence of the Standing Committee. Adjourned.

HARTFORD, June 1st.

The Standing Committee met again-present the same Members as before.

Joseph Scott, having submitted testimonials, agreeably to the requirement of the canons, was recommended to the Bishop to receive the Holy Order of Deacons. Adjourned.

The Convention adjourned, to meet at 8 o'clock to-morrow morning. CHRIST CHURCH, THURSDAY, June 2d.

The Convention met pursuant to adjournment. Prayers were read by the Secretary.

The minutes of the proceedings of yesterday were read and approved.

Mr. Horace F. Lockwood, who had been duly elected to represent the Parish of New-Milford, but had not furnished himself with the required certificate of his election, was, on motion, admitted to a seat in Convention.

The subject of the Bishop's Fund was, on motion, taken up by the

Convention, and after some discussion, was deferred till 2 o'clock this afternoon.

Resolved, That the thanks of this Convention be presented to the Rev. Mr. Hull, for his Sermon preached at the opening of this Convention; and to the Rev. Mr. Jarvis, for his Sermon preached last evening, in behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge.

Resolved, That a Committee of two be appointed, to ascertain what Parishes are delinquent in their contributions to the Convention Fund. Mr. Goodwin and Mr. Adams were accordingly appointed. On motion, Resolved, That this Convention proceed to the election of the Standing Committee for the ensuing year. Whereupon, the following gentlemen were elected, viz:

Resolved, That a Committee be appointed to inquire into any delinquencies in the collections for the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and to report to this Convention.

On motion, the above resolution was referred to the Committee appointed on the Convention Fund, to report thereon.

Resolved, That this Convention now proceed to elect, by ballot, a Principal of the Episcopal Academy of the State of Connecticut, established at Cheshire: Whereupon the Rev. CHRISTIAN F. CRUSE' was unanimously elected.

The following resolution having been introduced and read, the same was approved, and ordered to lie over for the consideration of the next Annual Convention :

Resolved, That in the 1st Article of the Constitution of this Diocese, the words, "the first Wednesday of June," be stricken out, and the words "the second Tuesday of October" be substituted in their place.

Resolved, That a Committee be appointed to prepare an abstract of the Parochial reports for publication in the Journal. The Secretary and the Rev. Mr. Judd were appointed that Committee.

The following resolution was adopted unanimously.

Resolved, That this Convention cordially approves of the great objects of the American Colonization Society, and recommends to the Reverend Clergy of this Diocese to bring the subject before their respective congregations, on or near the Anniversary of our National Independence, and, at the same time, to take up contributions in aid of its funds.

Resolved, That the Treasurer of the Bishop's fund be admitted to

a seat in this Convention. The Convention adjourned until 2 o'clock, this afternoon.

CHRIST CHURCH, 2 o'clock, P. M.

The Convention met pursuant to adjournment. The Rev. Mr. Burhans, in the absence of the Bishop, took the Chair.

Mr. Sigourney at the request of the Convention, presented and read his report, as Treasurer of the Bishop's fund, and made a verbal statement in relation to it.

The following preamble and resolutions were then passed :

Whereas, it is highly desirable that this Diocese should have the benefit of the undivided labors of its Diocesan, and particularly so at the present time, when many of the Parishes are destitute of settled ministers. Therefore

Resolved, by this Convention, that while they bear in grateful remembrance the important services rendered to the Church at large, by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Brownell, in founding and raising up Washington College, to its present state of prosperity and usefulness, they do also express the earnest hope that he will devote his labors exclusively to the pastoral care of the Diocese, as soon as a suitable gentleman can be provided to fill the office of President of the Institution, and a competent support for the Bishop shall have been provided by the Diocese.

Resolved, That Messrs. Beach, Huntington and Boardman be a Committee to wait on the Bishop with the foregoing resolution, and to report his decision to this Convention.

The Rev. Mr. Burhans asked and obtained leave of absence, for himself and Mr. Charles Jarvis, for the remainder of the session.

The Rev. Mr. Judd took the Chair. The Committee appointed to wait on the Bishop, having performed their duty, reported that he would shortly make a communication to this Convention.

The following resolutions were offered, and adopted unanimously: Resolved, That a Committee of five laymen be appointed to inquire, and to report to the next Annual Convention, what sum, if any, is due to the Rt. Rev. Bishop Brownell, according to the terms of the contract made with him at the time he accepted of the Episcopate.

2. Resolved, That the same Committee be empowered to collect the amount due to the Bishop's Fund, from any parish in this Diocese, according to the assessment made in the year 1813: or to compound the same for such sum paid or secured, as they shall think reasonable.

3. Resolved, That the same Committee devise and report a plan for immediately increasing the salary of the Bishop to the sum of eighteen hundred dollars per annum. His Excellency, Gov. Peters, C. Sigourney, R. Adams, B. Beach and R. I. Ingersoll were appointed that Committee.

Leave of absence for the remainder of the session, was granted to the Rev. Mr. Smith.

The following communication was received from the Bishop, and, on motion, was ordered to be recorded on the Journal of the Convention.

To the Convention of the Diocese of Connecticut.
BRETHREN :

I have received your communication, by the hands of Messrs. Beach, Huntington, and Boardman, your Committee, expressive of your desire that I should withdraw from the active charge of Washington College, and devote my labors exclusively to the pastoral care of the Diocese, as soon as a suitable person can be obtained to take the charge of the Institution, and a competent provision shall have been made for the support of my family.

I feel very grateful to the Convention for the kind manner in which they have been pleased to speak of my labors, and entirely concur with them in regard to the expediency of devoting myself exclusively to the charge of the Diocese, so soon as the contemplated provision shall have been made.

THOMAS C. BROWNELL.

Resolved, That the Secretary be requested to write to the vestries of those Parishes which have neglected to pay their assessment to the Convention fund, and urge their compliance with the resolution of the Convention.

The Committee appointed to take into consideration the delinquencies in the collections for the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, reported the following resolution which, on motion, was adopted:

Resolved, That this Convention again recommend to every parish in this Diocese, the establishment of a Society auxiliary to the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and that it be the duty of every Minister to promote the same, by aiding the members of his congregation in such establishment without delay; or in those parishes that are too small to form societies, to take up annual contributions for said object.

The same Committee reported that 32 parishes had paid their assessments to the Convention Fund (see Appendix No. 3); that 24 had not paid their assessment for the last three years (see page 29); 7 for the last two years (see page 29); and thirteen for the last year, (see page 29.)

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Convention, with the advice and consent of the Bishop, be requested to prepare blanks for parochial reports for publication; and that the several clergymen of the diocese be requested to give to the next Convention, such other information in relation to their several Parishes, as they may think expedient—and that the Bishop be authorized to select such portions of the miscellaneous information, as may be useful to be published in the Journals.
