THE NECESSARY CONNEXION BETWEEN THE LOVE OF GOD

AND OF OUR BROTHER.

i John iv. 21. And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth

God love his brother also. The whole compass of religion comprised by our Saviour

under the two great duties of loving God and loving our

neighbour, 2. The necessary dependance these two commandments have

the one upon the other, so necessary, that we, who profess to love God, must love our brother also, if we would be esteemed,

Luke xiv. 14. And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for

thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. The particular occasion upon which these words were spoken,

and the general sense of them explained, 17. The hopes of a recompense from men, for the acts of bene

ficence we show towards them, ought not to be our chief aim in doing good; and that for these three reasons :
